Poly | Surry Hills - Fried Potato topped with Salted Egg Yolk and Chives

Last month, my best friend and I went to Poly located in Surry Hills to celebrate our birthdays and achievements thus far. We started off with a glass of Pinot Noir, which was more on the lighter side and we thought would pair well with what we ordered for lunch.

The first dish that was served up was the six Sydney Rock Oysters accompanied by their chili vinaigrette. The oysters were fresh, and light, as expected, however, I wasn't a massive fan of their vinaigrette. It honestly just tasted like tabasco gone off, so I simply had the oysters with a squeeze of lemon on their own.

Next up, we were served the Fried potato topped with salted egg yolk and chives. This dish was just perfection! It felt like a warm hug on a chilly winter afternoon. It was crunchy and crisp on the outside, but moist and fluffy on the inside. I really enjoyed the combination of the chives and shaved salted egg yolk (which I thought was cheese at first, because I stopped at Fried Potato when reading the menu).

Then moving onto the star dish of the day, we had the Dry aged grass-fed ribeye (900g) and Smoked carrot with burnt coriander paste and labneh. We originally thought that 900g would be too much for us two, but it was either that or the 1kg 5+ black market Angus ribeye...so we decided 100g less would probably do us good.

The moment the ribeye landed on our table, our mouths were watering and we couldn't wait to dig in! It also came with some condiments which were mustard, horseradish, and pepper paste. The meat was cooked to perfection as it was succulent, juicy, and not gamey at all. Additionally, the fat on the meat felt like it was just so well distributed that it wouldn't be too tough or fatty with each bite. My favourite condiment was definitely the pepper paste, it was just very strong in flavors and I also mixed in a little mustard and horseradish for that extra oomph.

The carrot was not the most appetising dish to look at, but the flavours speak for themselves! It was clean, yet full of flavour, yet not too heavy for our palette which helped when we wanted a vege-palate cleanser from the ribeye. The burnt coriander paste went so well with the labneh (which what I originally thought was cream cheese!), that I just wanted more of the combination.

We finished off our meal with a cocktail each, where we ordered the Mandy's Garden and Polycillin. The Mandy's Garden was a delightful, fruity and refreshing drink whereas the Polycillin was more leathery, golden and strong.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Poly, and would highly recommend ordering the Fried Potato and the Dry aged grass-fed ribeye. We were told that they usually have smaller pieces at around 300g, but they were completely out the day we went. Personally, I love sitting at the bar seating area right in front of where all the drinks are made and poured because it just becomes a little more personal. Plus you also get the most amazing photo lighting as there are two large glass windows that allow passersby to take a look, but also for you to enjoy and watch the people go by.
