Having lived in Sydney my entire life, it took me 21 years to properly see the Opera house in person, so the least to say I have finally made my way to Bennelong, which was a long time in the making. I booked a table of three for their Sunday Jazz lunch session. The staff's service is impeccable which was evident upon entry where we were greeted the moment we arrived in the open space and taken to our table. The live jazz performance was resonating throughout the entire premise which was beautiful.
The menu was a three-course choice menu for $180 per person, where some of the dishes would change depending on the season and the best produce. I ordered the Mud crab, soft polenta, corn, and brown sugar, which was probably the least beautiful presented dish however, the combination of flavours made this dish one of the key winners. The koshihikari rice, sea urchin butter, coral prawn, and wilted nasturtiums were elegantly plated. With its clear but flavourful broth, it was a pleasing dish for those who prefer a lighter palette. Similarly, the sashimi scallop, oyster cream, picked white turnips, aged vinegar, virgin soy, and seaweed, although again on the lighter side had the effects to draw you in again for another bite.
Moving onto the mains, the three of us decided to go for three different dishes, so we could all share them. I ordered the Tasmanian lamb short loin which was accompanied by zucchini, green olives, barlette onions, and garden herbs. The lamb was tender and delicious. The Roasted Maremma pasture-raised duck came with housemade hunter sausage, grapes and kampot pepper was delightful, as it was a rich in flavour yet not too heavy. The Local pink snapper with the shaved southern squid, white turnips, koji emulsion, and kai-lan blossoms was another dish that was just plated with such elegance. I thoroughly enjoyed the different textures in this dish which went well with the koji emulsion.
At last, dessert! We ordered the Chocolate Crunch, Strawberry & Cream and the Cherry Jam Lamington. The Strawberry and cream was presented as a parfait with strawberries, ice-cream, panna cotta and cream, it was a lovely light and sweet note. The lamington was quite rich yet refreshing. The lamington consisted of cherry ice cream, with a little sponge and a generous pour of chocolate ganache. The dome-shaped chocolate mousse covered with organic rice crispies had an intricate mix of flavours.
We finished the meal with the cheese platter, which we did not finish! We also got some matching wine to go with it which was quite an experience for us. Overall, I had a lovely time at Bennelong and can see myself coming back in the future when theirs a new menu that captures my attention. Not all dishes were calling out to me to come back again, so I guess I was a little disappointed there, however it is an experience to dine inside the Opera House.
