Caraway ☕✨| Newest Cafe in Burwood

It's been almost two months since this new cafe opened in Burwood, and I'm here to share my thoughts on it with you to kick-start the year on my blog. Conveniently located on the peaceful George Street, a 3-minute walk from Burwood Station, Caraway Cafe is the newest addition to the 'coolest neighbourhood in Australia' (and #16 in the world) by Time Out Magazine in 2025.

At Caraway, they offer a wide range of dishes to cater to breakfast and lunch, as well as an assortment of beverages, including their house specials. I've been here a couple of times since they opened,, and it's already making its way up fast on my summer favourite list.

The first dish I tried upon my first visit was their Crab Mafaldine (A$28), which consisted of blue swimmer crab, tom yum bisque, cherry tomato, black caviar and prawn oil. It was beautifully presented and made my mouth water just by looking at it! Before I had even taken a bite, I was already impressed as I could see large chunks of crab meat tossed in the pasta, and the aromas were building the hype. As I took my first bite, my taste buds were fully enveloped by the flavours, which worked in harmony and offered a delicious, hearty yet homey meal and had a small kick of chilli to further enhance the experience.

On my next visit, I took my friend out for lunch at Caraway, where he ordered a 'Protein Boost' smoothie, made up of peanut butter, blueberry, banana, protein, oats and almond milk. It had a creamy, velvety smooth texture and was nutritious too.

I ordered their 'Pandan Cold Brew', which was one of their house specials. It was beautifully presented, with the pandan foam clearly visible on top of the cold brew. I was told to mix the two together to enjoy the flavours, as odd as it sounds, somehow it worked. The coffee base itself was a low acidity, meaning not a very sour profile, which made it smooth for the pandan flavours to work well, adding that layer of sweetness and additional nutty notes.

This time round, I ordered their Scallop Mafaldine (A$28), consisting of panfried scallops, miso bisque, shimeji mushrooms, black caviar, and bottarga. Now I was honestly impressed, as the scallops were not cut up into smaller bite sizes nor sliced in half to appear there was 'more'. They were just your good, full-sized scallops plated beautifully. Again, their pasta was al dente (perfection!), and full of flavours that just felt homey. No sauce wasted!

My friend ordered their Reuben Sandwich (A$21), which was made up of smoked wagyu, russian dressing, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, and pickled zucchini. At first bite, I could taste the richness from the smoky wagyu and swiss cheese, yet it was not too heavy as the pickled zucchini, sauerkraut and dressing further elevated the harmony of balancing the flavours out. The bonus was the crunchy bite of the bread, adding that extra texture to each bite!

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Caraway on both occasions, and I definitely will be back for their pastas once again, though I am looking forward to trying their other food items on their menu. If you're around Burwood, I highly recommend trying Caraway cafe, especially if you're looking for a seafood pasta for under $30 here in Sydney! My favourite is definitely their Crab Mafaldine so far!
