I visited ellu cafe, which is a cute little cafe nestled in a heritage building in Darlinghurst, about a 15-minute walk from Central Station. My friend Tony and I heard that this place was popular for their French Toast and matcha drinks using ceremonial-grade matcha powder.
When we arrived, there was a large crowd already waiting around at the front of the cafe; however, I noticed an online waiting list, so we left our details and walked around the neighbourhood. We waited about 30 minutes before getting a call to let us know that our table was ready.
The staff were friendly and showed us to our seats swiftly, where we were seated under the staircase behind the little bookshelf. It is a bustling spot, as we're also quite close to the kitchen, but we can also peek through the bookshelf to see the barista prepare everyone's orders.
We decided to order the Blue Crab Linguine($30), the Osaka Moon ($27), and I ordered their Cold Hojicha Latte ($7.50). The pasta consisted of blue spanner crab, linguine, tomato sauce, salsa, verde, calabrian chilli, and parmesan. Unfortunately, I found it a little bland, with barely any crab meat; however, the pasta was cooked to perfection. I think if they added a little more kick to the overall flavour, the dish would have been amazing. The okonomiyaki was very flavourful; however, mine came out a little burnt.
The hojicha latte was pretty good, and I would recommend it if you prefer a more warm, smoky, and earthy flavour with notes of caramel and cocoa.
Overall, in my opinion, ellu cafe was not worth the hype! I don't understand why there is such a huge crowd for this place, but it could also be because I didn't order any of their French toast or matcha drinks, which are what they were more popular for. Food-wise, I'd probably give this a skip as it's not the cheapest brunch option out there either. Drink-wise, I didn't try their coffee, so I can't say whether it'd be worth the wait, but the hoji latte was pretty flavourful and I would recommend it if you don't like the grassy flavour that matcha would have.
If you've been, what did you order?
