The most popular and interactive digital art museum in Tokyo, Mori Building Digital Art Museum - Teamlab Borderless, has attracted attention worldwide and was on the top of my "To do" list when visiting Tokyo this time round. The museum was created between Mori Building and TeamLab where the interactive artworks have no border separating them from one another and some even extend beyond their own zone and into corridors to create a new experience for visitors which can only be found at this museum.
There are five main zones that can be enjoyed in this museum, which include the Borderless World, Athletics Forest, Future Park, Forest of Lamps and EN TEA HOUSE
In some of these zones there were other artworks in the same area which we could interact with. So let's talk about the areas I went through, starting off with the Forest of Flowers and People: Lost, Immersed and Reborn
The Forest of Flowers was the first artwork we came across and it gave off a fantasy fairy world as the whole area is filled with colour flowers. The seasons change gradually across the whole installation space where the life cycle of various flowers and colours are displayed. They also play around with mirrors in the room which gives the illusion of a larger space than what it is.
As you draw closer to the hill where the waterfall flows, flowers would appear at your feet. When more people are in the area the more sensors will activate where the flow of the water particles draw the shape of the waterfall. It also crosses the boundaries of other works, sometimes influencing them where it is then accumulated back into the waterfall of the Universe of Water Particles on a Rock where People Gather.
One of the most popular Instagrammable spot in the museum, the Crystal World uses a lot of LED lights which interact with the TeamLab Borderless app or the tablet found in one corner of the room where you select a kanji character ad the lights will change accordingly.
Black Waves - Continous
One of my favourite rooms where the movement of the waves are simulated in a computer-generated three-dimensional space. In the centre of the room there are beanbags which you can relax while watching the waves pass by. I felt completely immersed as I started to drift off and enjoy the art from a distance. Plus it was a great break from walking around.
Another insta-worthy artwork to take photos! The lamps are made from Murano glass (Venetian glass) and resonates a different colour when it senses a person standing close to the lamp. Once the lamp lightens it spreads to the nearest lamps creating a ripple effect. The four walls and floors are mirrors that reflect both the lamps and humans inside the installation, creating the illusion that we're surrounded by these beautiful lamps. The duration per stay was 45 seconds and the amount of people in each session are limited to make sure it doesn't become overcrowded. While you're lining up and waiting as a spectator you're able to look through from one of the walls and enjoy the lamps change colours. If you're coming here I suggest come early as the line gets extremely long and make sure to think of what poses for the photos.
The Way of the Sea in the Memory of Topography - Colours of Life
Starting off the water lily-like pads are tall and above our heads and gradually get shorter as you walk through the installation. We follow the fishes which are rendered in lights through the installation where people in the space are assigned colours and when the fish pass by they are dyed by that colour.
Light Cave
A room full of lights shooting through different angles wrapping around the body of people in the space.
Multi Jumping Universe
The Athletics Forest is a creative physical space which allows you to interact with various artworks. To thoroughly enjoy this space you cannot be wearing heels, sandals or platforms due to the physical work out in this interactive world, such as the Multi Jumping Universe installation. Flat shoes and sneakers are recommended but if you don't have any you're able to rent sneakers on the spot.
The Multi Jumping Universe's flexible surface allows multiple people to participate at the same time. As you continue to jump in the same spot you can create a black hole in the universe, sharing the life cycle of the stars.
Weightless Forest of Resonating Life
I was trying to find this room and had no idea what the installation was called and when we finally found it I was excited to touch every single balloon-shaped artwork. Every time one of these balloons are moved or touch they change in colour.
Crows are Chased and the Chasing Crows are Destined to be Chased as well, Floating Nest
I was unable to take any photos in this room as it would have been extremely hard to capture, but this was my number one favourite installation! A large web nest floats in the centre of the space and you can lie down or sit up during the session. It was honestly super relaxing and immersive. This work begins when the crows of Crows are Chased and the Chasing Crows are Destined to be Chased as well, cross the Flower Forest and enter the Floating Nest. The work ends when the crows leave the space and disappear.
I failed to head over to the other two zones, Future Park and En Tea House as we had to meet up with the rest of our group for lunch. However I definitely would love to come back again, especially if they add or change some of their installations.
For more information, check out their website: MORI BUILDING DIGITAL ART MUSEUM
The museum is located in Palette Town, Odaiba and can easily be reached by train, stopping at Aomi station. The museum is close to a giant Ferris Wheel which you can see from far. I highly recommend coming to the museum if you haven't been already to enjoy the beautiful artwork and interactive installations.
If you have been to the museum, what was your favourite installation and why?
